Open Question: Setting up a wireless internet connection?
Please bear with me, when it comes to computers I'm not the smartest! So I'll try to explain this and hopefully someone knows what I'm even talking about. :)
I just got cable and high speed internet hooked up in my apartment. Right now I have a cable box obviously hooked up to my television and a router (I think that's what it's called) hooked up from my cable jack and then a cord runs from that and plugs into the back of my laptop. When the technician came to my house to hook everything up, he asked if I had a wireless router and I said no. He ordered one for me and I have to hook everything up myself. (Paying them $150 to come to my house and do it is out of the question.) I'll just do it myself. Now here comes my confusion..
Do I have to keep everything connected the way it is now, or am I unplugging the router box from my laptop and just using the wireless router? I don't have any other computer, just one. I feel like I just ordered something that I can't use. Could someone help, please!

I'm moving into college in a month and i just got a mac. My college provides a cable so you can access the cable television. i don't have a tv but is there some way i can get my mac screen to act like a television screen? Is there some fancy gadget i can attach to make that work?
moreOpen Question: Suddenlink DVR: Have to Use the Provided DVR?
We just got a DVR through Suddenlink, and we added HBO and Cinemax to our package. Unfortunately, we were not told that the additional channels (HBO and Cinemax) could not be seen on all televisions in the home. When I called and asked, they said we'd have to pay an additional monthly fee for each TV we want the channels to air on.
That seems a bit ridiculous to me.
A friend as a DVR he's trying to sell, and I told him I'd buy it off of him if I was guaranteed it would work. So, my question is if I buy this other DVR and hook it up to another TV will I then be able to get my additional channels on that TV? From what I understand -- from what the woman on the phone said -- it sounds like my new DVR is acting as a cable box?
So, if I keep the one I have in the family room and hook up another DVR in a different room, should that solve my problem without costing me additional monthly fees?
Hope someone can help. I appreciate it in advance!
Thanks
moreResolved Question: How do I get out of this rut at age 23?
I am in college but will not be done until age 26. I have a 5 year old child. I live at home with my mom and 22 year old brother. I make $150 (a month) through freelance work. I am only 23 and this life is getting to me.
Our apartment is under a section 8 voucher so if no one works in the home we only have to pay $1 for rent. Heat is included. The only thing that we have to pay for is the any phone or cable service and lights.
I have been looking for work since last year. I cannot believe how hard of a time I am having getting a job.
How do I get out of this rut? I can see myself treading down the same path as my mother, she is 52 and gets a check for $1,000 a month. She only seems to have money once a month and spends her days in front of the television and computer sipping on beer and scratching tickets. I love her but I don't want my life to be like that.
My daughter will be starting kindergarten soon so I have a couple of hours to get some things done and fix our situation. My daughter does not suffer or starve. She is well fed, has nice clothes, and plenty of toys. It is me who is underfed, owns 4 pair of jeans with holes in all of 3 of them.
I am pursing a degree in Broadcast Journalism and Health. Aside from looking for ordinary jobs at restaurants and retail stores, I am looking for jobs in the media field.
Any advice?

moreOpen Question: Why is my mom so mistrusting?
She is very mistrusting of nearly everyone. Very negative and cynical and she believes that everyone is generally "bad". As a result, she refuses to make friends and spends all of her days in her bedroom watching television. She also has a fear of going out in public alone. She constantly needs to be chaperoned.
She recently got really upset with me because she came to me for advice about a situation she's going through with her brother. He bought her a computer light online and had it delivered to her. She sent him $11.00 cash. A few days later, she asked him if he received the money yet, he said no. She thinks he did and kept it. She sent him a check for $11.00 this time to ensure that he would get it, or so she would at least have proof that she sent it, according to her. About a week has passed and he said he has received the check and now the money as well. She's still under the impression that he lied about not receiving the cash sooner and thinks he "scammed" her. I gave her my opinion and told her that I highly doubt that his intension was to order her something online, magically predict she would send him cash and lie and say he never got it. I told her she should give him the benefit of the doubt. She became so pissed at me. She said both he and I can go and kiss her ass. She has since cut him out of her life.
I have a mellow, very laid back personality and I don't like to deal with this drama. But yet, it seems as though she's always making something into more than it is. It's been this way for years. I can't begin to tell you my childhood because I have vague memories and distorted images.
She thinks everyone is out to "get" her. I try to tell her to let her guard down and to stop being so mistrusting. Again she gets upset and tells me I'm living in a fantasy world. She's constantly on guard as if someone is about to attack her and is completely offensive about everything. Once I was dating this guy and we'd gotten to a point where we got serious so I introduced him to her. BIG MISTAKE. He brought her flowers. I joked to him and said, "oh, you bring my mother flowers but not me". He and I laughed. It was clearly a joke. She went berserk and started yelling at me, in front of him no less, saying "who do you think you are"..."are you trying to say I'm a piece of shit and you're better than me?". Then she threw in the fact that I finished high school and went to college, which I have no idea what that has to do with anything. She said "you think because you finished school you're so much smarter than me? I'm not stupid, I know what you're trying to say."
Needless to say, I was mortified and refused to introduce any of my friends or future boyfriends to her. She never has anything nice to say about anyone. She has been this way with all my brothers and sisters, 6 in total. All except 1, her favorite, my sister. The only reason my sister is her favorite is because she takes my mom everywhere she needs to go, and agrees with everything my mom says. She has no opinions of her own and will willingly nod along with any crazy notion my mom has. I refuse to do so.
Some other examples of her "paranoia" are:
She thinks the neighbors are stealing her cable
She thinks that people are watching her from the kitchen and her bedroom window. And mind you, her bedroom window has an air conditioner in it. Sometimes she'll open it a tiny bit from the side of the a.c which is a limited amount of space and yet she still thinks people can see her through about a 1 inch opening.
The ironic thing is, my mom trusts no one but herself and her favorite. Subsequently, her favorite (my sister) steals from her all the time. Charges things to my mom's credit card, money will go missing from her bank account and everything my sister owns is in my mom's name. My mom has come to me again for advice on that matter, I try to tell her that it's obviously my sister, she used to steal when she was younger as well, but my mom is in such denial even though the evidence speaks for itself.
What is wrong with her?
serious answers only please.
Sorry for the length.

I recently purchased a 32" HD tv and hooked it up to the same satellite box that we have been using for few years. moreOpen Question: What does "poor" mean to you?
The average "poor" person, as defined by the government, has a living standard far higher than the public imagines. The following are facts about persons defined as "poor" by the Census Bureau, taken from various government reports:
•Forty-three percent of all poor households actually own their own homes. The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio.
•Eighty percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, in 1970, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.
•Only 6 percent of poor households are overcrowded; two-thirds have more than two rooms per person.
•The typical poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)
•Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 31 percent own two or more cars.
•Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.
•Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.
•Eighty-nine percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and a more than a third have an automatic dishwasher.
moreOpen Question: TV Reception in House Depends on Location on TV?
I have an odd and unique problem here. When the people that lived here before us built the house, they screwed up a few things. One problem is the wiring they did with the antenna going to the TVs in the house. I should also mention that we have always used a roof antenna to receive our TV. We don't have cable or satellite. The Digital television transition had nothing to do with this. When we watched analog television, our upstairs living room television always got the clearest picture. The other TVs weren't terribly worse than the upstairs living room TV, but that got the best reception. Nothing improved during the DTV transition. The upstairs living room TV still gets the best signal. We can't even watch ABC on the downstairs TV because it never comes in. Yet it comes in just fine upstairs.
Anyone know what this problem is? Does anyone know how to solve it? I always thought it was the wiring going from the antenna to the TVs, but I don't know exactly. I'm almost certain it isn't the antenna because we once had a different antenna but I believe the problem persisted. I'm sure it's not the TVs as well because we have had multiple TV changes throughout the house through the years.
Remember, this has NOTHING to do with the DTV transition. This is happened since we owned the house. (13, almost 14 years).
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

I am watching a television show on extreme airports, and it has never occurred to me, I'm working on becoming a private pilot right now on my way to eventually commercial flying, why do they not have arresting gear on these hazardously short runways for the large commercial aircraft with hundreds on-board? I understand that there is special concrete that collapses under the weight, but is it more expensive to replace the concrete as opposed to arresting gear? I'm thinking that they don't have the gear because they would need people to work the cables, like on an aircraft-carrier and because the cable hooks would have to be put on every aircraft that would fly into these airports. I just thought it would be easier than having to replace large sections of special concrete. If anyone knows the true answer to why they don't have cables, please let me know. It's just one of those questions that made me wonder.

I own a television which I believe has Freeview installed within - like an internal box. I moved to a new address and using the same TV I can no longer get the Freeview signal. Do I need to get a Freeview box or is the problem with the ariel set-up in this new house.
The main TV downstairs - in this shared house - has Freeview but this comes from a Freeview box. But at least this surely means that the Freeview signal must be entering the house to be picked up by the downstairs Freeview box.So surely a TV cable going directly upstairs into my TV - completely by-passing the downstairs Freeview box - should enable me to receive Freeview. Is this correct?
Am I also right in believing that with some TV's you don't need a Freeview box because the TV's have internal equipment to pick-up the Freeview signal?
