Voting Question: Low paying 'fun' job or higher paying 'boring and serious' job?
Right I've just finished uni and everyone's going on about how hard it is for graduates to get jobs theses days, about 2-3 weeks ago i left my long term job working in a bar within a cinema, I had been there for 2 years and have made lots of good friends and did have a laugh most of the time, the shifts were random and unfortunately the hours were never guaranteed and the management had very little respect for us at some times, I would be lucky to take around £200 a week during a particularly busy week and really worried if i would be able to pay my monthly outgoings; around £500 - £700 depending on how many times we all went out etc.. So i started looking for more serious jobs (14k-16k) as my flat mates had and i was feeling a little behind, i eventually got a job working as a cashier in a building society on about 13k working 8:45 - 9:15 mon-fri and have been there for 2 weeks now and at first was finding it ok, but then i started to notice that i was on a completely different schedule to all my old friends who would be going out on weekdays and working weekends completely the opposite to myself. What go more annoying was that i would have to be in bed before 12 to ensure that I'm not knackered and don't mess up someone's account so i can't go out and get wasted, of course i can go out and not drink much but where's the fun in that. The jobs started to get very mundane, serious and I'm starting to resent it, yes i can comfortably pay my outgoings but I'm not having fun at all. I know a lot of people in their 20s who are still living semi-care-free lives whilst just making ends meet, is 21 a bit soon to be getting serious, i used to be obsessed about not being in a crap job by the time I'm 30 but wouldn't i have rather have had fun? Its also put quite a strain on my relationship with my gf who lives in the moment not caring about money and is getting fed up of me worrying, is that careless or the way forward?? Should I go back to my old job and have fun and try not to worry, live in the moment? Sorry for such a long and random question, I'm sure other people have been in the same boat. moreResolved Question: How should I take it when I get the shaft two weeks in a row?
I started working for the new cinema in my area. Our grand opening was June 24, with a "friends & family" night on June 23. I was told before the job started (we trained at another theater since it's from the same chain) that once our theater opened, there would be as much OT as could be stood. Then the new schedule came out. I worked Friday & Saturday last week, and i work closing tomorrow (July 2). Then I am off again until Tuesday (July 7) and close both July 7 & 9. There's only one other female with the same job title and she's getting one shift. Upon comparing the schedules from June 26-July 2 and July 3-9, all of the guys are getting 4 or 5 shifts a piece. I didn't ask for these hours...In fact it was just the opposite--I asked for as many hours as poosible! I'm not happy with this and I don't appreciate the fact that the girls seem to get the short end of the stick. What can be done? I am planning to talk to the general manager tomorrow... moreResolved Question: Is my freshman schedule good? (high school)?
Before you say anything about my classes, most of these i was required to take and i can't take AP classes until sophomore year. I didn't put in any honors classes though because I'm not that smart and i need to find out if these classes are going to be hard enough or if i can go into honors classes. Julie & Julia (2009) starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. It was scheduled to show on February 4, 2010. I don't think it did, does anyone know? Thanks! =D moreVoting Question: Birthday Plans for Boyfriend?
Hey Everyone, So I'm planning a nice evening out for my boyfriend for his birthday. It's not 'till mid-October, so I still have a lot of time to figure everything out. I'd rather get everything planned sooner rather than later, though. =] Anywho, I was wondering if you guys/girls can help me with figuring out what to do with a rather large gap I have in the plans. Also, if you could tell me if these plans sound nice enough, or if you have any other reccommendations on what to do, that would be good. =] (Please keep in mind I'm a rather poor university student, haha) So I was thinking of starting out about 6pm or so at my house. I was going to cook him his favourite meal and surprise him with the DVD's of his favourite show that I thought we could watch an episode or two of while eating. From there, I wanted to get a taxi into a really posh part of town and go to a nice restaurant for dessert and maybe a short walk through town afterwards to our next location (weather permitting). This is where I have the gap in the schedule and would like some help. I was hoping to find a nice bar/lounge with some live music and get some drinks, but I don't know if it will be possible to find a bar with any live music going on that night. If not, I was hoping you could suggest another activity we could do? There's nothing on at the local theatre that night, and the cinema just seems a bit boring =/ Then from there (wherever that may be), I wanted to go to a near-by hotel where I plan on getting a junior suite for the night. I was planning to have the room already laid out with candles (maybe) and strawberries and champagne (one of his favourites), and to have some nice lingerie and massage oils ready to go. Then letting the night proceed from there =P Recap: Dinner at mine --> Dessert in town --> Bar/Lounge, Maybe? --> Hotel Okay, thats it, haha. So, do you think these are decent plans and what could I do to fill that gap? Any recommendations are welcome. Thanks for getting through that, haha. =) I'll be 19, and he'll be turning 22 if it makes a difference? And we're in the UK where we can both legally drink and go to bars. =] moreVoting Question: Is there a 3D Cinema in Montréal playing the Spain v Switzerland World Cup Match on June 16th?
I looked over the schedule for matches being filmed and broadcast in 3D and that match is one of them. I know Sensio (the company that was given a set of rights to provide 3D technology for the World Cup) is from Montréal and has released several press statements saying they were in talks with several cinemas in Montréal to broadcast their 3D matches. I am Spanish and my girlfriend is Swiss and we and others are going to Montréal that day to watch the match. I very much appreciate the help. moreResolved Question: Having migraines, REALLY NEED HELP/ADVICE... please?
I've been having migraines that I feel are getting progressively worse. I have been to the doctor. He prescribed an antidepressant, and a pill for when I actually get a headache. The latter doing nothing. I take the antidepressant every day, like I'm supposed to. I've been on it for about five weeks, which is when I last went to the doctor. I've been keeping track of when I get them, but I can't really figure out what is triggering them. I think I've narrowed it down to sensory stuff, like persistent loud noises (like the past few times I've left the cinema I've had a migraine and loud music has triggered it twice...I think)really bright light and reading for long periods. Either its coincidental, or I'm supposed to be confined to a dark, quiet room for the rest of my life? I don't have any allergy problems and I'm not emotionally unbalanced. I've heard that stress can cause it, and depression. I also heard that certain foods can trigger the, but I haven't figured out if any do. I had a migraine that started half way through the day of last Thursday. I took some Extra Strength Tylenol, which is all I had on me. It lessened the pain to something in between barely noticeable/tolerable, but only for an hour. I had to go home. I took a nap, and when I woke it was WAY worse (it woke me...) I was pretty much disabled. I was nauseated and actually vomited. I've been nauseated with basically all my migraines before, but have never actually vomited. I also had a slight fever of 100.6. I also felt extremely weak. Like with nausea, I've felt "weak" before, but not to this extent. I basically strained to move any part of my body. I ached all of over. My migraine was a full on 10 (1-10 scale) in pain, the highest was like a 7-ish). My entire head was pounding and it felt like my brain was being squished (or what I think it would feel like). I dragged my self to the kitchen after vomiting for some water because my mouth was dry. I then basically collapsed on my sofa, where I was double over cuddling with a throw pillow. I felt like screaming, the pain in my head was so bad. I was dizzy and confused/out of it from the pain.I know my father came home and actually suggest the ER. I shrugged the suggestion off as I don't think you can go to the ER for a migraine? But I seriously considered it. I remember waking up the next morning at like 10AM...still on the sofa. I have no clue what . I felt kind of hungover, with a lingering pain in my head. I had one almost as bad on Monday It started in the morning and lasted until halfway through Tuesday. I was basically bedridden. Most of my migraines before are pretty bad, but not as bad as the last two. I've had a few that last a couple days. I'm not sure if I'm having that whole aura effect... but I see little lights, like dots and sometimes flashes. It also seems like theirs a gnat/some kind of small bug that is at the top of my vision, kind of like a bug floating around your head. I've swatted at the "fake gnat" before. My vision is also blurred a bit when I get migraines. I've never really had tingly/numbing sensations. Is it possible that there is some cause to this? Could I have a tumor (extreme, sorry?)? Do I schedule another appointment with my physician? Can he refer me to like a neurologist or some other specialist? I'm not really sure where to go or where to read up on this. I'm really, really scared. I actually fear getting migraines and they're so common, like two or three times a week. I need advice because like I said I have no clue where to turn. Any help is very much appreciated. PS- Sorry for this being so long. I tried having as much information as possible. PPS- Sorry, for second edit :/ *more info* I don't know if its related to my migraines, but it seems as if so. I seem to get "cravings". Like I've craved Ben & Jerry's, Fudge Rounds, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Sweettarts, etc. It seems to be a couple hours before my migraines, kind of like a warning?! moreResolved Question: Why is there no schedule? Sena activists vandalise Mumbai theatres; 46 sainiks held Tue, Feb 9 05:40 PM Shiv Sena activists held for demonstrations outside theatres in eastern suburbs against Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming film 'My Name is Khan', prompting the police to arrest 46 troublemakers. At Mulund area, the glasses of Mehul cinema were broken after one of the protesters pelted stones, police said adding that several gathered outside Huma Cinema at Kanjurmarg and R-City Mall at Ghatkopar area, shouting slogans against Khan and the movie, scheduled to be released on February 12. "We have arrested 46 Shiv Sena activists protesting outside the theatres. More arrests are likely," Additional Police Commissioner (East) Ritesh Kumar said. The protesters threatened the theatre owners to stop the advance bookings or face the severe consequences. The Sena activists were booked for unlawful assembly, rioting and further probe was on, police said. The Sena had threatened to stall the screening of the film, protesting Khan's support for inclusion of Pakistani players in the upcoming IPL but party supremo Bal Thackeray later said that the film's release will not be disrupted. Earlier today, Karan Johar, director and co-producer of film, met City Police Commissioner D Sivanandhan to discuss the security issues ahead of the movie's release. Dr. Abdul Kalam's dream of 2020 will be shattered if rowdy elements ransack the whole of India. It is the most difficult job of the security agencies to set right the different sena's or different rowdy elements ransacking Indian people and their properties. How difficult it is to make those destroyed properties. People construct by spending thousands of crores of rupees and gets destroyed in seconds. LOSS FOR ALL INDIANS. LOSS FOR ALL INDIAN GOVERNMENTS. Hats off to the security agencies fighting against violent rowdies. Security agencies like police, armymen needs some kind of appreciation for maintaining peace. Hard work done by the security agencies often forgotten by the Indian people. I wish to congratulate the security agencies all over India for their hard work - risky work - risking their life - serving the nation round the clock. moreResolved Question: Where can I book a party room?

Ok, so in my Film Appreciation class we watched this movie. The thing is that my teacher thought we were watching the Original. The fact is that our "Movie Vault" gave him the director's cut instead. So since the director's cut is an hour longer then the original. So my teacher's schedule was all messed up over this. Anyways, we watched it and he ABSOLUTELY loved the original and he considered the director's cut as a "sequel" because all the unanswered questions from the original are answered in the Director's Cut. When he told us about the Original, he asked us to try and see the Original and compare them. Ok, so i ordered the DVD off Amazon that had both the Original and Director's Cut. I watched the Original first and then the Director's cut (In one night yes....Movie Nerd). Honestly, I think the Director's Cut captured my heart more than the original. But I still love the original. I guess maybe because Is aw the DIrector's Cut first has something to do with it. I dunno....so what do you think? Original or Director's Cut? I have two job interviews scheduled for today for my very first job! I applied at like at least 30 places, and two called me back. The first is for an amusement park called Kings Island and it starts at 5:00, and the second is for a movie theater called the Regal Cinema. and it starts at 6:30 It'd be nice to work at either place, and I really want either job, but I am SO nervous! I plan on wearing my hair half up, half down (it makes me look like a third grade teacher, actually), light makeup (which is weird cause i usually wear very heavy dark makeup), my smallest nose ring (you couldnt see it unless you were looking for it, and im not sure if it's against the dress code, so im just covering myself), I switched out my gauges to just big pearl earrings, im wearing a black polka dotted dress that comes to my knees, and a nice little white sweater over top. All in all, I think I'll look alright, but I have like NO other dress-y clothes so it'll have to do regardless. I'm only 16 but i'll be 17 in less than a month, and I am the bubbliest, most obnoxiously friendly person you'll ever meet. Do you think I have a shot? Would you offer me any suggestions before I take a giant leap into the big pool of semi-adulthood? I am bi and not out and so is she. We both like each other but tend to ge nervous and at a loss for words around each other even though we have known each other for some years now. We see each other often around this time because of a group we're involved in but we only flirt lightly when we see each other.. She is a bit older than I am, has a hectic schedule as a journalist (she even had to work on Christmas day) and has a young son (about 9 yrs old). Her parents babysit him when she needs tho. I would like to spend some time alone with her but not sure where to start. I'm still in my parents house so I can't ask her over. I also want to be discreet and not too much in the public eye. She has a wide network of acquaintances because of her job. My network is not as big but not very small either. Both our communities are also kinda small so most of the people who we know tend to frequent the same cinemas and malls and clubs etc. I was thinking about a picnic in a park or a walk on the beach or somewhere else that is safe but doesn't attract a huge amount of people on a regular basis especially now during the holidays. Paul, Thanks for the kind words, but I can't take all the credit for the CyberCafe. Apple generously provided all the Macs. IT departments around the world may say that Macs are hard to network, but we put a dozen Macs on the Internet in under an hour. Apple sent top of the line G4s with Cinema displays, and Titanium PowerBooks, as well as a bunch of iMacs. Imagine what the lines would have been like if we only had three computers, as we did in Montpelier. The true highlight of the cafe was the free espresso. Thanks to Phoenix Flow Systems, Guava Technologies, PROzyme and Becton Dickinson for contributing to the coffee fund. By the time we got to the coffee I had blown the marketing budget on this endeavor, and these companies stepped in to make sure you had Ryan Brothers coffee instead of the swill we'd have gotten from the hotel. I also extend a special thanks to Kevin Becker for bringing the Mar Dels to the banquet. The best band of any ISAC I've attended. The CyberCafe crew was Jennifer Wilshire, Maciej Simm, Adam Treat and Amy Hsu. They thought they were getting a leisurely week on the beach, and ended up working 9 to 9 every day to keep the CyberCafe running. It was an exhausting schedule, and they were tireless in their support of the attendees' Internet needs. It never would have come off without them. Sophia Ascani and Alexandra Treister tie-dyed the 350 shirts. Each one is a unique work of art, and each was hand-dipped. Our garage floor has the stains to prove it. So wear them proud, and wash them in cold water. We've agreed to do it again at ISAC XXII in Montpelier. I'm just thankful this congress is only held every second year. I finally feel philosophical enough to impose some of my thoughts regarding the recent B-D software debate on my colleagues. I use B-D in this discussion as a paradigm for all flow manufacturers and biotech companies. Many of the arguments I've read on this network seem to reflect a disdain for business in academia. In other words, the notion exists that a profit motive is less than honorable and often interferes with legitimate scientific inquiry. I contend that corporate profit is in the best interest of academic science. B-D makes money by selling cytometers, not software. Software sales can not support the overhead necessary to build the hardware. Every company tries to get a "leg-up" on their competition with innovation, low price, more features, etc. We are the beneficiaries of this competition. I concede B-D's point, giving away their 'leg-up' will in the end be counterproductive to B-D and to those of us who rely on B-D. If B-D does not make money, they go away and we all build Cytomuts. I am not very handy, so, this institution would probably be flow-less if someone did not sell cytometers. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is fodder for future discussions. Many of us have been in this field long enough to remember when our monoclonal antibodies were limited, quality was inconsistent, standardization was poor and support was nonexistent. Also, new antibodies were slow in appearing. Thankfully, it is profitable to sell monoclonal antibodies and the research which requires them has flourished. One final point on software. As some have noted in past messages, the best software has come from independent providers (Verity, Phoenix, TrueFacts, TechTeam, etc). If software is given away, it will no longer be feasible to sell it and those who make a living by providing us with innovative and useful software will go the way of the Dodo. We will be left with only those who are willing to give it away or (B-D, Coulter and Ortho). As those companies have argued, they do not make money on software. Therefore, it is unreasonable to think that we can count on the flow manufacturers to meet our analysis needs. That leaves only our colleagues who are willing to give it away as a source new software. I hope the parallel to monoclonal antibodies is apparent. ________________________________________ • Next message: Brian Hall: "Employment Opportunity" • Previous message: Larry Seamer: "CD-ROM" • Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ author ] [ attachment ] ________________________________________ This archive was generated by hypermail 2.1.6 : Thu Jan 01 2004 - 17:27:06 EST Re: Thanks for the suggestions - was rendering in 3D This message: [ Message body ] [ More options ] Related messages: [ Next message ] [ Previous message ] [ In reply to ] [ Next in thread ] [ Replies ] From: Adam Treister <...@treestar.com> Date: Thu May 18 2006 - 20:20:18 EDT On May 12, 2006, at 10:02 AM, Bushnell, Timothy wrote: > Thanks to everyone who suggested possible software to view data in > 3D. Disclaimer: (it shows up as a Quicktime movie), but that too is very difficult to use in a way that's better than two 2D graphs connected by a gate. If you really want to increase your dimensionality, we're just adding a new "Polyvariate Plot" to the Mac version of FlowJo for next week's ISAC. The idea was taken from RFlowCyt. We've added interface refinements to make it more interactive, but like any good R tool, it'll astound and confuse you. http://www.flowjo.com/v8/html/polyvarplo... The Polyvariate Plot can model transformations in any number of dimensions. So it will produce a 3D plot, or as many dimensions as you want (Shown below in 5D). And it projects these transformations onto a graph window, so you can gate on them. We're still trying to figure out the applications for this visualization, but if you're looking for another dimension as a way to differentiate populations, we think this is potentially much more power powerful than conventional spatial projections. This is explained in the poster P178 at ISAC next week, or at the web page above. Be forewarned: This is the opposite end of the sizzle/steak spectrum. Most people use 3D graphs to make their PowerPoints look spiffy. These graphs are absolutely impossible to explain in a presentation.
