Open Question: Which are the top UK universities for English/Literature/Translation?
I've already asked a similar question but it went to the wrong category, I hope I will get a wider audience this time! I'm a 24 year old girl from Italy, I graduated in English and want to study in the UK as a postgraduate. I'm still uncertain about which course to take, I love English language and of course I want to keep getting better at speaking and writing it. I wouldn't mind becoming a translator, but I am also interested in journalism, public relations and event organizator. Did I mention that I also love cinema? :D as you can see, I'm pretty confused. I'd rather study in London, but I would consider another city when assured that the university is top there. And, most importantly, is it too late to apply? Many university site I visited had the due dates for applications in February/March! Thank you very much. PS: I took the TOEFL iBt and got a 106 score, may I find any difficulties in choosing a postgraduate course? moreOpen Question: What is a good film to watch ?

I have always felt a great admiration and devotion to british culture, your music, rock, art, cinema, literature, and all related with the life in the UK seems fascinating to me (I am mexican), but I have always had a doubt regarded with your lifestyle: How do you feel to live in an island country? Its a difficult question, but let me try to explain: For me, like a mexican, we belong a continent, with frontiers. It is difficult to live isolated (just for say something, I cannot find the correct meaning) in an island? It is something that make even more special all the magic regarded with your immense culture and all british legacy? I hope maybe some of you can answer my difficult question? What i meant is a movie which had ,either as a main theme or sub-theme, an overtone of cinema or even heavily referring or primarily focusing on cinema history, film-making or the lifestyle and outlook of the industry. In my list, here are those : 1. 8 1/2 (Italy / 1963 / Dir : Federico Fellini) 2. Sunset Boulevard (USA / 1950 / Dir : Billy Wilder) 3. Cinema Paradiso (in italian : nuovo cinema paradiso) (Italy / 1989 / Dir :Giuseppe Tornatore) 4. The Player (USA / 1992 / Dir : Robert Altman) 5. Mulholland Drive (USA / 2001 / Dir : David Lynch) 6. The Dreamers ( France-Italy-UK / 2003 / Dir: Bernardo Bertolluci) 7. Boogie Nights (USA / 1997 / Dir : Paul Thomas Anderson) 8. Pulp Fiction (USA / 1994 / Dir : Quentin Tarantino) I would like to put "Persona" by Ingmar Bergman (1966) in the list, but i don't think it was about "cinema illusion" Well, not all of them are the best or entirely "a movie about movie" but at least for sure those movies have blown me away! they're truly my favorites. What do u think about my list? And how about yours? Share your opinion here! I need them to advance my scriptwriting effort (which is about cinema at it's core). Do you know if The Runaways will either come out in the cinema in the UK or when it will be out in DVD?? Thanks xxx moreVoting Question: From Italy, looking for Postgraduate courses in UK (London would be great). Need help!?
Hello everyone, I am 24 years old and have a degree in Foreign languages from Parma University, Italy. English has always been my subject of interest. I was an Erasmus student in Cardiff for one semester back in 2006/2007 and had a great time there experiencing the British college life. I have just taken the TOEFL iBt and got a 106 score, so now I am looking for a good postgraduate course in the UK. I can't decide on the area, since I am interested in several career opportunities: I love cinema and English literature: I wouldn't mind being a translator/interpreter and work in the field of Screen Translation or Translation for Literature. I also like writing and travelling, that makes journalism an option too. I did several researches on the internet, and I found a couple of interesting but need the opinion of someone who actually lives and studies in the UK, and most of all who knows which are the best Universities/courses. Thank you very much! PS: I know London is much more expensive compared to other cities, and that scares me a bit.. but living in London has been a dream for a long time, and I am fascinated by the cultural/social life that I could find there, that makes London my number 1 (althought I am not refusing other options). Why is that they have family dinners and spend birthdays, Christmas etc together? Why do American families go to church together? Here in the UK family values are in major decline; hardly any families eat together and even if you did say you were going home for dinner with your family you would be laughed at and 88% of the population is atheist; the rest are Muslims (we have respect for them though; just not any other religions; we are not racist) Also we don't go to the cinemas with our parents like American teens do; why are old fashioned views still accepted in the USA? moreVoting Question: I don't know what to wear? Over the past few years Donnie Yen as been making some of the best action movies to ever come out of Asia but yet due to distribution issues his films are hard to find in USA. I'm a huge fan of his portrayal of the martial arts legend -- Yip Man on film. And his other films of 14 Blades, Beggers & Assassins, are both filled with drama and action only available in Hong Kong cinema. Now I don't know if its some sort of deal with Dragon Dynasty or what but why does it take YEARS for his films to be released in Region 1. It can't take them forever to do a English dub! My wife comes from Mexico and the other day she told me that only young people are allowed to work in places like Mc Donald's, Burger King, Cinema etc. I was disgusted as this would suggest that equal rights for work would go out of the window but she made a valid point after that. She explained that in Mexico it is very hard for a young person to get work and by these companies reserving places for young people only, they have a much better chance and getting a job and also aiding them to by books etc. Also it would force people not to end up in a dead end Job (no disrespect intended for people who work in these) and pursue a better career. what are your thoughts on this? Should we adopt this in the UK or any other country for that matter? moreResolved Question: Does anyone know if there are set to be any open air cinema/screenings anytime soon in the UK?

Heyloo. Okay so i'm 14, live in the uk. i come from a middle class background and i've been brought up being taught that if i want something i have to work to get it, it wont just happen because i want it to. So i get £50 a month, it may sound like a lot but it really doesn't last very long. I tend to go out with my friends and if i'm going out i'll pay for the bus/train, lunch, cinema, drinks etcc... And i was in the car today with my dad and he was like "i'm surprised you haven't asked for a raise in your pocket money - make a business case" so i asked him what he meant and he said make like a written report saying why i should get more pocket money and the advantages and such. He also said to decide how much i like. I cant think what to write so could anyone help? and also how much more should i ask for ? :S thanks a lot x moreResolved Question: Help with finding out what a film is called?

Is there any particular reason why the projectionists in London are forced to leave the lights on in movie theaters? At best they will merely dim the lights, but never ever switch them off completely. As expected, this somewhat ruins the overall quality of the projected image. I would love to know when this rule came into place and exactly why, as this rule doesn't seem to be enforced in the rest of the world. moreResolved Question: Any good Romantic films out in cinema?
(UK) moreResolved Question: isn't it strange that so many guys in the world and you can't?
I've noticed that there are so many guys out in the world, whether you're shopping or hanging out with friends at the cinema, or being at the airport getting checked in or being on a buss/train full of people and you don't even find one guy who really like you alot. I am looking, just studying and I see so many guys and if I could, I would choose one man and be off with him for life but men don't noticed girls that way, init? Their eyes are like google.com, all they see is a pretty legs, pretty face and nice clothes and the loudest girl in the group or the most confident girl in the group, never mind the quiet looking decent lady. Sure you need to get to know them to feel the chemistry (another word - gelling) I been on my own for at least 3-4 years now and although i do go out, i am still dateless. Oh heck, I give up. I am fed up waiting and being dateless. I don't know what else to do to distract myself! I am tired of going on courses and not getting a job too. (I am in UK) moreResolved Question: How can I get my girlfriend's dad to accept me?
I am 19 and my girlfriend is 20. We've been going out now for 4 months and everything really is fantastic, other than the fact that her dad would never let her go out with me (if he knew). My girlfriend is Turkish but English is her first language and she has lived here most of her life, her younger brother is the same and her mum also lived most of her childhood in the UK. Her dad, however, did not move away from Turkey until he was about 30 and grew up in a Turkish village so my girlfriend says he is very typically Turkish (unlike her mum and brother). I have been to my girlfriend's house on several occasions but only when her dad isn't home (he owns a take-away shop so works every day until the early hours of the morning meaning that I am able to go to her house in the evenings). I have met her mum and her brother and spent time with them watching TV and even went to a football game and the cinema with my girlfriend and her brother. Her mum and her brother both like me and I'm completely comfortable around them and they both are happy with their daughter and sister dating me. Her dad, however, is completely different. my girlfriend has told me that he has told her that he doesn't want her to get a British boyfriend and that while he understands that seeing as they are living in the UK for at least 4 years (whilst she is at uni here) she will go on dates, he doesn't want to know about it and he doesn't want her in a serious relationship. This, recently, has started to affect me a bit, I just wish that if her dad ever knew about us that he would not bother about what nationality I am (surely that counts as racism?) and just see that I'm a nice guy and that his daughter is happy. I'm hoping that if it eventually does get revealed that the fact that her mum and brother both quite like me will play in favour. Until then what can I do? Is there anything I can do or say to my girlfriend that would support her because this is bothering her a little bit too. i need a reliable mobile tariff giving decent rates on international calls, namely india. o2 offers from 50 mins for £10 top up etc but I am somehow more inclined to pick orange or t-mobile as they offer a tariff that offers calls to india @ 3p via short codes, and these are not dodgy I checked their tariffs and they support such short codes/ access codes. all three tariffs are only available on PAYG packages. so the two I'm drawn between is t-mobile and orange all calls everywhere in UK 15p and only difference is that t-mobile offer free voice mail which i only sometimes use and is 15p on orange. again there's the 241 orange wed's but again I hardly go to the cinema but I suppose someone else could use codes from me. so really it comes down to which operator is best and which can offer me a worth while service. I know three offer the same rates on the short codes but their reception isn't the best. alternatively if you know of any other tariffs that offer great international rates then please do spill the beans especially if it is on a monthly contract. thanx for ans so far, don't want to sound rude but i'm asking for which is the best operator as I know the package I want. it has to be PAYG so I can benefit from the low international rates. Alt if you guys know any tariffs offering low/er international rates then please do let me know. I voda do 5ppm international but thats landlines only and still 2ppm more than orange or t. thanx. moreResolved Question: dimensions for an 80 seat cinema?

The legal age to vote in the UK is 18. However, when you are 16, you are considered able to pay taxes when you have a job, get married, have children, leave education, pay adult fares on transport and in theaters/cinemas/anywhere really and be legally responsible for your actions? Also at this age you are generally expected to be at least partially independent and to be able to make your own choices and face any consequences without you parents stepping in to help. So why aren't they given the option to vote? People seem worried, or even bitter, about the fact that 16 year olds can be pretty lazy or unopinionated about political affairs but those who are uninterested wont register to vote and therefore wont. I guess I'm saying why not give those who are interested and care about the state of this country a chance to vote? moreResolved Question: Please help me with this?

I've posted this question before but I edited the sixth chapter a lot, so if you want to see the first version, you can do here- http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ai9z8HnutJa4kOJ8Sq0MwtghBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20100412025702AAXwff3 You can also read the other chapters from clicking on that. Anyway here's the final version of the sixth chapter- I still really wanted to be with Antonio. I longed to be with him; kiss him, touch him, hug him... Sarah hadn’t realised quite how lucky she was, she took it for granted really. I watched her all the time, receiving kisses from Antonio, and she didn’t seem as happy as she should be. If that was me, I’d be the happiest girl alive. Now, without Antonio, I was possibly the saddest girl alive. I sat in my room most days, blasting music such as ‘that should be me’ by Justin Bieber, as music was the only thing that related to what I was feeling: it understood me. All my friends thought Justin Bieber was ‘gorgeous’ and ‘dreamy’ but in my eyes, he was nothing compared to Antonio; no-one could compare to Antonio. Why didn’t anyone understand how much I loved him? Mom just called it a ‘stupid crush’ when I told her about him. Then again, everything to Mom was stupid, especially me. I just felt like no one loved me, like I didn’t deserve to live. I contemplated ending my life a couple of times, but then Antonio and I would never be together, ever. I had to get rid of this awful pain though. Not physical pain, the pain in my heart that Antonio had caused. It hurt so much, knowing that Sarah had taken the place that I was never really in. I just thought... he’d kissed me; it had to mean something, right? I wondered if he actually planned to kiss me, gave it some thought; thought about me? I said all this to Mom and she just told me I was stupid for falling for this ‘loser’ however I didn’t see Antonio as a loser- I seen him as an amazing, wonderful, beautiful person. One day, whilst sitting at home, I got so fed up of not being with Antonio. It didn’t help that Tara, Timmy, Sarah and Antonio were going on a double date. I imagine them, sitting in the cinema together; not watching the movie, if you understand what I’m saying? It hurt so bad, like a knife in my heart! Mom left her ‘happy pills’ in the bathroom, I considered taking a few. I thought once again about ending my pain; ending my life. What would Antonio do if I did? Would he cry, would he even spend the time thinking about what we had? I hated saying had because it indicated that we didn’t have anything; that it was all in the past. Not thinking of what I was doing, I took a knife from the kitchen and ran up the stairs, ran myself a bath and just sat in the cold, unsatisfying water. Looking at the knife and feeling brave, I got ready to slice my wrist when a spider appeared on the wall! The knife dropped on my arm and into the bath, leaving me with a huge cut. I didn’t want to do this anymore: I didn’t want to cut. This was my first time and I didn’t technically cut myself: I dropped the knife on accident. I didn’t want to be a cutter, I realised it wasn’t as cool as I thought. In fact, what’s cool about cutting your wrist? Why would anyone get a ‘rush’ from it? I picked up the knife, ran down stairs and quickly washed it before anyone could spot the blood. Then, I put a plaster over my wrist, trying not to touch it, because it hurt too much. All of a sudden Mom came barging through the door, obviously drunk. “What’s that?” she asked, pointing at my plaster. “A plaster,” I replied, slowly walking away. The next Tuesday at school, I made my way to poetry club. As I walked into the class, I noticed Sarah weren’t in as Antonio was sitting alone, looking bored. Looking at the piece of paper containing my poem for him, I thought ‘should I or not?’ and the only answer I could think of was yes. “Alright class,” the poetry club teacher, Mrs Hathaway shouted, getting the club’s attention. “Elizabeth wants to read us her poem.” Antonio didn’t even bother looking up; he probably didn’t care but I began to ready anyway. Maybe the words- and the immense feelings behind these words- would catch his attention? “We were quite good friends, you and I,” I began, looking at Antonio. “And after only one kiss, I fell in love with you extremely and scarily deep.” This had caught Antonio’s attention, at last! He glanced as me as I read the rest “I thought you felt the same way... but just after one little mistake, you ended what I thought a relationship” I paused. Antonio closed his mouth and just sat there for a while too. After a bit of thinking, I read the rest “It really made my heart break. Now you’ve got a new girl, and although she’s beautiful and probably nice” I sighed before saying this part, “You should really be with me, not her. I’ll love you for the rest of my life.” Antonio sighed. That’s all he could do I guess, sigh. After poetry club I was walking down the corridor to my next lesson when I moreResolved Question: Speaker recommendations - Hyundai / Beng or JBL Control 1 or Wharfedale Diamond 9.0 or other suggestions?
I am building a home cinema system on a budget and I do mean budget. I have just acquired a Yamaha receiver which is a good start but now need the speakers to match the package together. I am looking for eventually six speakers 2 front. 2 rear, centre and sub-woofer but am starting naturally enought with the front two. I have a natural inclination toward floor standers but that is purely for aesthetics and no other reason so when I saw this: http://www.hifi-tower.co.uk/Hyundai-Floor-Standing-Speaker-Pair-LB-776_p1599_x2.htm I sat up and paid attention, they look so good but they are made by Hyundai under a Beng brand that I've never heard of. Anyone had any experience of them? The alternative would be some JBL Control 1's or Wharfedale Diamond, I know either of these would be a safer bet but they just don't look as good. I could accept either as surround but as front speakers they just look tiny. I've considered Eltax floor standers but have been stung in the past open to any and al suggestions you may have. I would probably get the Control 1's or Diamonds in a 4 pack to match front and rear Apologies this is mainly going to be for Sky HD, PS3 and downloaded films from a HTPC. moreResolved Question: which home cinema system shall i get?

I'm from the UK and heading back to America this summer to work... last summer in a small town in Pennsylvania, there is a cinema/theatre (what ever people call it) and we brought tickets every week until our 5th week of being there when we all realised no one actually checks the tickets - ever! So from that point and for the remaining 3 weeks left, we would just walk into the cinema, buy sweets or a drink or go to the toilet and just walk around and go straight in and watch the film and leave, with no staff questioning us - ever! They simply just talked behind the counter and thought we had just purchased tickets (The entrance is next to the box office, then you go through some doors into the cinema).. What is the worst that can happen... I don't want to be thrown out the country for stealing - but then the employees aren't doing their job and there is never anybody to show the tickets.. Any ideas? just so you know, I'm just worried about things like.. Fines etc.. I don't have my parents with me when I'm over there lol, I'm working and 21 :) moreVoting Question: When is the UK relese date for the film 'Cherrybomb'?
